Highlights are the precision-coloring version of going lighter. Your colorist slices thin sections of hair, paints lightener onto each one, and seals it in aluminum foil to process at controlled heat. The result is dimensional, multi-tonal hair with carefully placed brightness — exactly where you want it. Unlike balayage, foils give pinpoint control: face-framing pieces, money-piece accents, full-head dimension. The technique has been the foundation of professional hair lightening since the 1960s.

Did you know foil highlighting was actually accidentally invented? In the 1950s, French stylist Fanci Forman experimented with kitchen aluminum foil to keep separate sections of hair from touching each other while bleaching — and the technique stuck. Today, top Manhattan and Toronto salons charge $300 – $600 for a full head of highlights. The technique itself hasn't changed much in 70 years; what makes a great highlight is the eye of the colorist placing them.
