Choosing a Program
Cosmetology vs Esthetics vs Hair School in BC: Which Program Fits You
Published October 13, 2026 · Legends Academy · Abbotsford & Langley
Cosmetology is a general term for beauty training, and in BC the choice that matters is whether you want to work with hair, or with skin, nails and waxing, or with laser and light.
Those three paths take different amounts of time, cost different amounts, and fall under different BC rules. Start with the work you want your hands doing every day. The rest follows from that.
The six programs side by side
| Program | What you learn | Length | Program fees | Next start |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hairdressing Diploma Program | Cutting, colour, texture and extensions | 1,500 hours, 47 weeks | $17,738 | Dec 7 |
| Esthetics Diploma Program | Skin, facials, nails, waxing, massage, makeup | 800 hours, 35 weeks | $17,710 | Dec 1 |
| Medical Esthetics Laser Diploma Program | The Esthetics diploma plus laser and light | 1,060 hours, 48 weeks | $21,152 | Feb 2 |
| Medical Laser Certificate | Laser and light, for students who already hold an Esthetics diploma | 260 hours, 13 weeks | $4,715 | Ask either campus for the next start date |
| Waxing Certificate | Full body waxing, brow and lash tinting | 250 hours, 11 weeks | $3,314 | Ask either campus for the next start date |
| Nail Technology Certificate | Manicures, pedicures, acrylic and gel, nail art | 400 hours, 17 weeks | $7,714 | Dec 1 |
Program fees are the total program cost before GST/PST: tuition, registration, and textbooks, kit and supplies. Every program runs at both campuses; Medical Laser is listed as coming soon at both. The programs page has the full breakdown, and the funding page covers how students pay.
Hair school: the one with a trade attached
If you picture yourself behind the chair with scissors and a colour bowl, this is your path. Hairdressing at Legends Academy is 1,500 hours over 47 weeks, Monday to Friday, covering designer cuts, foils, multidimensional colour, extensions and texture services.
Hair is the only one of these paths with a trade pathway. Hairstylist is a SkilledTradesBC Red Seal trade, and the SkilledTradesBC page lists technical training of 15 weeks over 2 years, 3,150 hours of work-based training, an interprovincial Red Seal exam and a practical assessment. It is not on SkilledTradesBC’s list of compulsory trades. Ask admissions how your diploma hours fit that pathway.
Esthetics: skin, nails and the whole spa menu
Esthetics suits someone who likes quiet, close, careful work: a facial, a pedicure, a full set, a brow. Esthetics is 800 hours over 35 weeks, Tuesday to Friday, and covers manicures and pedicures, artificial nails, waxing, skin analysis and facials, full body massage, body treatments and makeup.
The province lists esthetics, manicures and pedicures, and waxing as personal services, and regulates the premises where they happen, called a personal service establishment. More on that in do you need a licence to be an esthetician in BC.
Laser: esthetics plus laser and light
Starting from scratch and drawn to laser hair removal, IPL and radio frequency? Medical Esthetics Laser is the full Esthetics program with hands-on laser and light training: 1,060 hours over 48 weeks.
Already hold an Esthetics diploma? Medical Laser adds the laser and light training on its own, at 260 hours over 13 weeks. The province lists cosmetic laser services as a personal service, and lasers carry their own rules, covered in laser technician requirements in BC.
Nails or waxing: a shorter, focused start
If you know exactly which service you want to offer, a certificate gets you there in months. Nail Technology is 400 hours over 17 weeks: manicures, pedicures, acrylic and gel, tips, nail art and safe use of a nail drill. Waxing is 250 hours over 11 weeks: facial and full body waxing, with eyebrow and eyelash tinting included. Nails and waxing are both part of the Esthetics diploma too, so if you are torn between nails and skin, Esthetics covers both.
The weekly timetable and the money
The paths ask different things of your week. Hairdressing runs Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Esthetics, Nail Technology and Waxing run Tuesday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, which leaves Mondays free. If you are working a part-time job while you train, or arranging child care, that difference matters as much as the total number of weeks.
Tuition is the largest part of each program fee. Hairdressing tuition is $15,200, with $150 registration and $2,388 for textbooks, kit and supplies. Esthetics tuition is also $15,200, with $150 registration and $2,360 for textbooks, kit and supplies. Nail Technology tuition is $5,600 and Waxing tuition is $2,800, each with the same $150 registration. So part of every program fee pays for textbooks, kit and supplies, not only for tuition.
Intake dates differ by program and by campus, and the table above shows the next listed start for each one. If a date has passed or a program has no date listed, either campus can tell you when the next intake opens.
What the classroom side covers
Every program pairs hands-on work with theory, and the theory shows how different the jobs are. Hairdressing theory covers the properties of the hair and scalp, the principles of hair design, the basics of chemistry and electricity, and salon business. Esthetics theory covers the chemistry of the body and cosmetics, the histology of the skin, the electricity behind esthetics equipment, and salon business.
Medical Esthetics Laser adds communicating with the laser client, working in a medi-spa, pre- and post-treatment care, and the physics of light therapies and their contraindications. Nail Technology theory covers nail anatomy and the chemistry of nails and skin. Waxing theory covers skin anatomy, disorders and diseases, and the theory of every hair removal procedure.
Infection control is in the theory for Hairdressing, Esthetics, Medical Esthetics Laser, Nail Technology and Waxing, because each of those services is done on a client’s body on regulated premises. Hairdressing, Esthetics and Nail Technology theory also include resume writing and job interview procedures.
Three questions that settle it
- Hair or skin? Hair points to Hairdressing. Skin, nails and body point to Esthetics.
- Do you want laser? From scratch, Medical Esthetics Laser. With an Esthetics diploma already, Medical Laser.
- One service or the full menu? One service points to Nail Technology or Waxing. The full menu points to Esthetics.
Whichever path you choose, compare schools on more than price and length. Before you choose any school, look it up in the PTIRU directory: Legends Academy is listed as institution 03733, Designated, at both campuses. Admissions sets out how to apply.
